Paystack (free add-on)
#Overview
The Paystack add-on lets firms in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Kenya take client payments by card, bank
transfer, USSD or mobile money, and lets the platform bill firms' subscriptions through Paystack.
It's free. Install it from Super Admin → Modules → Available add-ons (see Add-on Modules); every firm
can use it once it is installed. Version 1.1 of the add-on needs Matterly 1.5 and also takes payment for extras
bought while signing a Smart Form; on Matterly 1.4, use version 1.0.
Paystack charges in NGN, GHS, ZAR, KES or USD, depending on the country of the Paystack account. A firm whose
currency is something else sees a warning on its payment settings and can't take payments through Paystack.
#Client payments
- In Settings → Payments, choose Pay online when booking, then the Paystack card.
- In the Paystack dashboard, open Settings → API Keys & Webhooks and copy the Secret key into the
Secret key field. Use the test key (
sk_test_…) while you try it out.
- Copy the webhook link shown on the page into Webhook URL on the same Paystack page. Without it, a payment is
still confirmed when the client comes back from Paystack, but not if they close the page first.
- Click Save Payments.
The client pays on Paystack's own page. Matterly checks every payment with Paystack, including the amount and
currency, before the matter is confirmed, and records it once even when both the client's return and the webhook
arrive.
#Subscription billing
- In Super Admin → Settings → Payments, set Billing gateway to Paystack and enter the platform's
Paystack Secret key.
- Firms add a card under Billing. Paystack takes a small charge to check the card (NGN 50, GHS 1, ZAR 1,
KES 10 or USD 2) and it is refunded straight away.
- Renewals are charged to that card each night, in the firm's currency. Declined charges are retried after 1, 3
and 5 days. A card that needs the cardholder (an OTP or PIN) isn't retried: the firm is asked to add it again.
Switching the billing gateway from Stripe to Paystack (or back) means firms add their card again, because a card
saved with one gateway can't be charged by the other.
#Testing
- Use Paystack's test keys and test cards while you set it up; nothing is charged.
- Then make one small live payment through a firm's booking page, and one card setup under Billing, and check
both in the Paystack dashboard.
